2. We Were Liars by e. lockhart
Plot Summary: Taking place over a series of summers, We Are Liars shares the story of the Sinclair family as experienced through the eyes of the first born grandchild, Cadence. Cady along with 2 of her cousins, Johnny and Mirren, and their best friend, Gil, meet on Sinclair's private island each summer. Beechwood is seems like their safe haven as it is the only place where all four of them are able to be together. Growing up on their idealistic island always seemed like a paradise until growing up opened their eyes to the reality of the darkness that surrounds the beautiful family. When tragedy hits, Cady works with her cousins to put together the pieces to reveal the truth of what happened during the summer that changed all of their lives.
My Opinion: This story is not the easiest to explain without spoilers, because there is so much to uncover as you flip through the pages of e. lockhart's story. We Are Liars is an extremely easy read and the chapters are so short that you will find yourself half way through the book without realizing it. I read this book for the first time in my Young Adult literature course during my Sophomore year of college and I'm not going to lie it may or may not have been one only the only texts I read to completion. I fell in love with this story immediately. I could not relate to Cady as a main character but I love the way e. lockhart writes Cady in such a way that it is okay to dislike her at times and feel sympathetic when necessary. She seems more realistic as a character because she is nowhere near perfect and she doesn't exactly try to be. Despite her family's ideals about the way one should act, Cady allows herself to be a bit more vulnerable than they would approve of. She isn't always the most reliable narrator but her interactions with her fellow Liars makes you want to be believe and want to believe in her. I recently reread this story, I mean, I literally just finished it this morning and I am still in love with the Liars.
